How to cope with cabin fever

Harrison Rose Painting & Decorating • Apr 09, 2020
Here we are during unprecedented times. The nation is in self-isolation, the world is combating the effects of COVID-19 and for many of us, these challenges bring with them huge levels of anxiety. We fear for the health of key workers, family and friends, we are unnerved by the unknown, and for some of us the measures also bring financial uncertainty.

Throughout this we are faced with many questions. How long will we have restrictions in place for? When will the tide turn? How long will we be confined within our homes to help combat the spread?

Here we explore some ways in which we can try to prevent our four walls closing in on us and to retain and promote good mental health and well-being.

1. CREATE YOURSELF A ROUTINE

Putting into place a routine is an effective way of managing your time and providing you with some continuity. Although it can be enjoyable having a few days to drift and to make up your schedule as we you go along, the novelty can quickly wear off. Instead, we are then left with a creeping lack of motivation.

Write down a daily schedule including what time you will wake up and go to bed, and what tasks you will carry out. If you have children at home, you can also put into place a home schooling schedule.

2. GET SOME EXERCISE

It is widely known that exercise brings with it many mental and physical benefits. In addition to keeping you supple and healthy, the endorphines produced will assist your brain with feeling good.

Take the opportunity to go for a walk or a run once a day (while following social distancing rules).

3. GO OUTSIDE

Staying at home can feel claustrophobic and also deny you with fresh air and the extra vitamin D gained from sunlight. Make sure you undertake your daily exercise and use your garden as much as you can. This may be a good time to do work in your garden so that you can be outside as much as possible.

If you don't have a garden, open a window to create a nice air flow and place a comfortable chair in a sunny spot of your flat or house. If you have a front porch (that keeps you a safe distance from others) then you could even choose to place your chair there.

4. CONTACT FAMILY AND FRIENDS

Stay in touch with your friends and loved ones. Have conversations and, where possible, try to avoid talking about the corona virus. This will give your mind some respite and help to manage your levels of anxiety.

Use Zoom or FaceTime wherever possible so that you can see people's faces. You will be able to read their reactions better and it will also make you feel less lonely.

5. READ A BOOK

There is little more relaxing than taking some time out to read a book. During moments of calm or quiet, finish off a book you have been reading or start a new one. It will help to keep your mind occupied and will prevent you from becoming over stimulated by digital devices, news reports and social media.

If you are feeling particularly inspired, you could even decide to write your own book!

6. FIND A CREATIVE OUTLET

Use this time to carry out a creative hobby that you may have. Or is there something that you've been meaning to do or to try for a while but haven't had the time? Now's your time to seize the day!

7. CONSIDER HOME IMPROVEMENTS

Spending so much time at home is bound to make you notice the various improvements that need to be made, whether that is due to maintenance or changes in your taste.

Why not undertake some of the work yourself and if not, use the time to obtain quotes from professionals who can undertake the works for you. For example, companies like Harrison Rose are able to provide online quotes for painting, decorating and plastering (so no contact is required). They are also able to carry out any works in line with government guidelines. With the weather being good this time of year, now would also be a great time to commission any exterior works to your property.
